Let’s Talk Bookish – How Reading Has Changed My Life

Good morning and welcome to Let’s Talk Bookish! Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by me, where we discuss chosen topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

Today’s topic is: How has reading shaped/changed your life?

Quick note: I totally forgot that the previous Sunday was the last Sunday of the month, and so I’m going to try and post December’s topics sometime tomorrow. Don’t forget that you can always find all the topics for each month on the Let’s Talk Bookish page!

There are many ways in which reading has changed the way I look at things, while also providing entertainment. To me, reading is a way to experience the life I never had or never will. And even though I read mainly for entertainment, I’ve learnt a lot of things about feelings, people, and life in general through books.

I think reading has made me more empathetic. At least, it has helped me understand people, and emotions to some degree. It’s made me more mature, while also teaching me that not everything is as it seems. Because a person has been condemned as a bad guy doesn’t actually mean they are heartless criminals.

It’s also kind of shattered my belief that justice always prevails. In the real world, people are corrupt, and justice doesn’t always win. The bad guys sometimes win and some people who are responsible for protecting us don’t care. As long as their pockets are filled, they are happy to do whatever keeps them that way. To me, that was just mind-blowing that someone, a judge, or a lawyer, would let a criminal walk free, or worse help them get out just to get more money. At least in most books, justice does prevail, but I now know that it’s not always the case.

Reading has also helped me understand my classes better, especially when it comes to Health. Health here includes how to take care of yourself, exercise, abuse, drug issues, etc. It’s easier to learn something when you see it in action at least for me and a book that has an abused character helps me understand the cycle of abuse much better than reading a whole technical chapter about it. If I read the chapter, I’ll understand, but reading a book that shows it happening in “real” life makes it easier to see why it’s so easy for people to be in this cycle and not realize it. Or maybe they do know about it, but aren’t trying to leave.

It’s also increased my vocabulary. Lol. Now I can use fancy words in my essays in school and feel really proud of myself. I can also finally start understanding what exactly the texts in my class are talking about because I’ve become an expert at using context clues. hey, it’s still an accomplishment

In general, reading has changed the way I view things, while also making it easier to understand the complexities of life and human emotions. It’s made me look for things that I would have overlooked before and helped with my classes. I’m also less naive and more understanding of how the world really works.

In the grand scheme of things, I think that reading has made me a better person.

  1. Oooh, I love this discussion post, Rukky! ❤ I honestly think that reading has helped me be a more empathetic and understanding person as well. We encounter so many different types of character in stories, each with their own unique struggles and ambitions, and it has helped me realize that some people can have vastly different ways of perceiving concepts and idea than I do. My vocabulary has also expanded through reading, as has my writing improved through blogging! 🙂

    1. 😊 So true. I’ve learned so much about the world, and about people in general through books. It’s interesting to see how vastly different everyone’s beliefs and understandings are, and how life is for people who are not like me.
Haha yes, blogging and reading are definitely very helpful when it comes to comprehension, vocabulary, and writing 💚
