400 follower Q&A explaining the start of my blog and how it’s grown + post shout-outs (pt. 1 of 2)

What do you guys think???

I’ve done yet another blog redesign, but this time, I actually think it’ll last? I’ve said that every previous time, but let’s ignore that. I’ve been working on all the graphics, and the color scheme since around June, and I’m now finally publishing this! I’m so excited, and I actually really like the look of it, so I hope you guys do too. Let me know in the comments down below!!

And now to the normal intro of this post:

Good morning my dear friends! I hope you have had a fantastic August. It’s so funny how weeks, months, and years fly by so fast, but then days take forever to end. And this lock-down is not helping things.

Nonetheless, hopefully this day will go pretty great since we’re starting it off with a 400 follower Q&A!! I am so happy to have reached this milestone, and I’m so thankful for every single one of you for following my little corner of ramblings and less than awesome designs.

Last week or so, I posted the 400 follower Q&A form for you guys to fill out, and I really appreciate all of you who did!! I’ve got a lot of questions, so I’ve decided to split this Q&A into two, this being the first part all about blogging, and then the next part will be about books, food, and my likes/dislikes.

This is going to be kind of long, so let’s get started!!

What inspired you to start the Lets Talk Bookish series?

A year and a month ago, I finally introduced LTB which is an idea I’d had for a long time. I had seen discussions being done on other blogs, and I loved reading them, but I was too nervous to write any discussions of my own.

My thinking was: Who would want to read my opinion? What could I possibly say that hasn’t already been said? What if my discussion flops?

And then I actually did go ahead and write a discussion back in January of 2019, because I found a topic that annoyed me enough to write about. That was about Bloglovin’ and how it showed your posts on their site, if you wanted it to be there or not. Things may have changed since then, so if you go read it, keep in mind that it’s close to two years old.

That post flopped. It really did. I didn’t get any comment on it until 4 months later. Of course, it was at the start of my blogging career, I didn’t have the community of commenters commentators? that I now have, but that seriously discouraged me.

In May 2019, I finally published another discussion about the Blood Heir controversy, and it did so much better. It still has a special place in my heart because it was my first discussion that I’m kind of proud of, and also the first one to do pretty well.

After that discussion, I was more convinced to do LTB, and after some prodding from my dad (he really wanted me to do it lol) I finally went ahead and announced LTB in late July, and officially started last August.

My little meme is over a year old. Time truly does fly by so fast.

What’s your greatest challenge and greatest success/favorite part when it comes to blogging?

I got two variations of this question, so I decide to combine them.

My greatest challenge is…

Drum roll please!!

*dun dun duhhhh*

…actually blogging?

Honestly, I’m pretty sure any blogger will tell you that the hardest part of blogging is blogging itself. The amount of time that goes into writing posts, editing posts, publishing posts, designing images for said post, replying to comments, blog hopping, keeping up with everything that’s going on and just surviving it all is unbelievable.

It’s energy draining, incredibly time consuming, and is currently very much my biggest challenge. Ever since school started, my posting has really declined. All what I did pretty much this past month was LTBs, and even those weren’t my best.

I was supposed to do the August edition of The Serotonin Monthly, but that is very time consuming and I haven’t finished it yet. I haven’t done a “reacting to my old…writing” post since June and I was supposed to have done at least 4 more of those since then. I intended to do a post sharing some diverse mysteries and thrillers, but it’s still in the draft phase as well. And the review that I was supposed to have written since is still sitting empty.

There is so much to do, and so little time. I really want a slow down button on life right now.

Right now, I don’t feel like I have a blogging success, but there are parts that I absolutely love, number one of which is reading everyone else’s posts and comments.

I love reading all your amazing posts, like

You’re welcome; you now have some posts to go binge-read 🙂

Here’s the thing: I read most of you guys’s posts, and I do read all the comments you leave on my blog, and they truly make me so happy. The problem is in replying to them all and leaving thoughtful or not so thoughtful but totally gushy comments. I don’t want to just write, “Great post” or “Loved reading this!!” or something that’s pretty basic like that. But 3 paragraph comments take some time to write and with so many posts and comments, it’s just too much.

It’s my favorite part of blogging for me, but it’s also one of the most disappointing areas because I don’t do as well with it as I would hope to.

What inspired you start your blog / When did you know you wanted to start a blog?

I wasn’t really inspired to start this blog, nor did I have a specific light-bulb moment where I went, “Aha, I’m going to start my blog today!”.

I just did.

It’s one of the few things in my life that has been utterly and completely spontaneous. I don’t even remember if I’d seen any other book blogs which made me think it’d be cool to start one. I think that I first joined Goodreads, and then saw people linking their blogs in their profiles, so maybe that’s what happened.

Either way, I created my blog without much thought and that’s the sadly very uninteresting story behind it.

Are there any other blog names you came up with / planned to use before you went with the current one?

See above. I don’t even know why I picked eternity books, and was so determined to use it that I made my url eternitybooksreview.wordpress.com since eternitybooks.wordpress.com was already taken.

I don’t understand myself sometimes.

Advice I wish I had known when I started Blogging / My suggestions for bloggers

There are so many things that you can be doing with your blog rather than repeating the same old list memes every week. not that they are bad or anything; they are pretty neat. If you like them, then go right ahead

That is something I wish I had discovered much earlier. I don’t have to do Top Ten Tuesdays to grow my blog. Sure, it helps people find me, but I don’t have to create this rigid “everyday I post a different meme” schedule so that people will stay and read what I have to say.

Related: Discussion on blog schedules

If I do something “original” and “unique” once a week, people will be curious and stay, and more often than not, they’ll follow to see what I’ll do next. I don’t have to do the same thing every single week for people to enjoy my content, and I wish I had learned that earlier.

(And I put original and unique in quotes because honestly, all these ideas have already been done a million times over, but at the same time, it’s still unique to every blogger which makes it fun.)

BUT, I also saw someone comment something similar to this somewhere recently: it’s kind of better to post a lot when you first start, and then once you start getting the following, you can slow down. That way, your new posts will hook them and result in follows, and then they can go look through all those older posts that you first did. (Update: It was Sumedha who mentioned this in a comment on her life update post)

That makes a lot of sense and is probably a good idea, but I kind of still think it’s better to do more quality content from the start. We bloggers are patient people; if it takes you another year to do a similar post, we’ll probably still be here waiting.

Another advice I’d give to any blogger is to have some sort of plan when it comes to your posts.

Write down all those ideas that come to you in the dead of night even if you don’t end up actually writing the posts until several months later. That way, when it’s been 5 months and you’re in a blogging slump (not that I’m saying you should be), you can go through those ideas and have some inspiration left.

I’m notoriously awful at writing things down. Positively awful. Partly because I’m lazy and partly because I’ll probably loose the paper or book that it was written on anyway. Yes, I’m that much of a mess irl. So I don’t write things down and I just rely on my memory, which has failed me time and time again, when I need post inspiration.

Obviously, that doesn’t work out 90% of the time, so please don’t be like me. Writing your ideas down can help you a lot when it comes to preparing or finding inspiration for posts.

And maybe you already do this so great job to you! I’m probably the only person who doesn’t do this lol

How do you balance blogging and school?

If these last few weeks have been any indication, I have no balance at all.

Honestly any advice I’d give would be generic: take notes, plan your time, get a calendar and write it all down, work ahead if you can, etc. and I don’t really want to do that since it’s not necessarily working for me, and it feels weird to be offering advice about something that I’m not even getting right myself.

But one thing I can say is, you need to know what your priorities are. If you’re stressing and you can’t handle blogging and school, well, school is the priority in that situation. If you have other commitments and by blogging, you’ll not be fulfilling those commitments, you need to rethink your priorities.

As much as it is painful to say this, my priority right now is school, and if I can’t find a balance between the two, I might just have to go on a hiatus till I can find some semblance of order in this hectic mess of life.

What are posts that you’re most proud of/Happy That you wrote?

I guess I’m proud of my discussions the most, specifically my discussion on the Blood Heir controversy, my recent one about not being sure of how to move forward with my responsibility as a blogger and reader, and my discussion on historical fiction and why I love it (including recommendations).

I also like my reacting to my old writing series because it’s pretty fun to be salty at my younger self.

Everything else is kind of eh. Generally, I don’t feel very proud of things that I do. Terrible I know, but it is what it is.

But you know what, here are some of the posts you guys loved these past few months:

That’s it for this part of the Q&A! I still have quite a number of questions left, and this post is long enough as it is. I promise, I’m going to try and make sure that part 2 comes within the next two weeks and not next year 😅

What do you guys think of the new design? Has your blog gone through many redesigns and renamings since the first time that you hit publish? What posts are you most proud of? Be sure to link them so I can check them out! How do you balance blogging and school/uni/work/life?? Share your thoughts down below!

  1. Omg, can I just take a moment to fawn over your blog design??? IT LOOKS SO GOOD!! Also congratulations on reaching 400 followers, I loved reading this Q&A! I absolutely agree about the whole balance between school and blogging. It took me a while to realize it but as much as I love blogging, school is just going to be a priority at the moment. So there may be times (like now, lol) where I’m not posting or blog hopping as much but over the past few years I’ve learned to not feel guilty about it.

Ahh, thank you for sharing our post 🥺 It means so much to hear that you enjoyed it!!

  2. I loved reading this q & a so much!!! I could relate to so much of what you said! I will spend an hour planning out every detail of everything and then just throw away my plans and then try to salvage them and fail miserably. And the hardest part of book blogging is definitely the blogging. I haven’t posted in 12 days and I really want to, and should, but I just can drag myself over to WordPress right now. I’m kind of in a blogging slump. But then I also have a million ideas for blog posts that I want to write right now, except for the fact that I have no time. My school starts in a little more than a week and I’m probably going to not do great with blogging because the only reason I’ve had a schedule the last 5 months is because COVID gave me extra time. And my comments are always so random and go on forever and I still comment on them because I feel like I should? I’m kind of a mess right now haha

But your blog is sooo beautiful and I love your new dividers with the tea 😍

And starting my blog was probably the most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done as well, which is kind of funny because I am NOT AT ALL a spontaneous person. When I started my blog I was like “book nook bits” yay! great name! let’s do the .home.blog version because it’s free and why not?

I probably should have done a little more research but NOPE!

Anyways, congrats again on 400 followers, and sorry for leaving a comment longer than most of the posts that I should be writing right now.

    1. I know right, it’s a never ending cycle!! Aww, I hope you’re out of that soon! It makes me feel so guilty when I see that all my posts have been LTBs because I want to be doing other things as well. I hope you’re able to write something before school starts ❤ Lol, don’t worry about it! I think it’s universally acknowledged that when August/September comes around, bloggers (especially us teen bloggers) disappear for weeks at a time, so you’re not alone!

      Aww thank you!! 🥺

Same! I love planning things out ahead of time and just being prepared for all eventualities and my blog was this random spur of the moment decision. Loll

Thanks Aria, and don’t apologize!! I think I am partly famous for leaving long all over the place comments as well but I love reading them anyway 😂✨

      1. Yeah, last year I’d just started my blog so I didn’t have any schedule whatsoever when school started, but now I don’t know how I’m going to adjust 😭

I like to think of myself as organized, but most of the time, I’m all over the place 🙈

  3. Ahh, I really like your new design, Rukky!! 🥰 And I’m glad you’re so satisfied with it right now – I think it’s super-important to feel good about our blog’s design, no one wants to create content for an unfriendly place they dislike. I really agree with you – I plan and schedule posts ahead of time, but there’ve been times when I couldn’t concentrate on blogging or didn’t have the time and I ran out of posts. So I stopped, because my studies were more important and the blog will wait even if we have to take a break. 🙂

  4. I LOVE THE NEW DESIGN AND THE COLOUR SCHEME!! It’s simple and neat but still pretty in its own way!! Good job, Rukky 💕💕

And yeayy!! You answered some of my questions!! I’m happy 😄 I feel you about blogging. It’s one of the hardest things about blogging that everyone would agree with. I also love to go blog hopping and comment on other people’s posts but like you said, it’s time consuming and energy draining and lately I haven’t been doing much of it too so I feel bad about it. But thank you for your advice (and for the blog posts rec too!)

I had fun reading your answers to these questions, Rukky. Looking forward to the second part of the post!! And once again, congratulations on reaching 400 followers 🌹🌹

  5. The new design is great, I love the little graphics!! 🙂

I like taking part in memes but I don’t do them every week, I just don’t have the time, and I also would rather just do topics that I find interesting than taking part every week for the sake of it.

I started my blog 8 years ago, I really cannot believe it’s been so long! 🙈 It’s always had the same name though! For the first few years I didn’t blog very regularly at all but I got into more as I went along and have been posting a lot more regularly the last couple of years.

In terms of blanacing blogging with school/work/life etc I think it’s important to have realistic expectations and goals for yourself. Some bloggers post every day and that’s amazing but you don’t have to. If that’s not realistic for the amount of time you have then don’t pressure yourself. There’s no way I could post every day. I’m happy if I post 1-2 times a week at the moment, but I try not to pressure myself too much to do that. If life gets busy it gets busy. I also have my health to consider as I have a chronic illness.

  6. Thank you so, so much for including my post! And I can relate too you on so many levels it’s amazing! Especially the part of leaving comments. When someone comments on my post I like to go to their blog as well and comment back, but I hate doing the boring old “thanks for sharing” or “great post.” It seems so un-genuine at times and that’s not the message I want to give. So I also tend too leave long paragraphs oops. And school is starting next week for me and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be in the same situation as you lol.

  7. Ahh I LOVE your new blog design!! my eyes have been blessed ❤ congrats on 400 followers! I'm glad you decided to start lets talk bookish because I love reading your weekly discussion posts so much ❤ it can definitely be hard to balance school and blogging I'm not looking forwards to going back to (zoom) school lol, but it definitely seems at least to me that you're doing a great job of it!

  8. Your blog looks amazing!!
My balance with school was off for two years. I started uni and stopped blogging, what is balance? haha But then I suppose you could I say I got used to it, and more importantly, I started missing blogging more and more. After months of thinking and overthinking I finally decided to come back and it has been great! I’m happy I’m back although I definitely had and still have to relearn things about blogging and about book blogging in specific!
I would absolutely love to write more dicussions in the future, that is something I have pending on my blogging journey!
Hope you have some great months ahead with your blog! ✨

  9. Oh, I love your redesign! It’s cute, and I like the colors. Redesigns are such a pain. I’ve gone through a few, and earlier this year, I went through a BIG redesign (to the blue and pink and dragons) and even changed my domain and blog name and everything. It was … daunting. xD But it’s finally done. It’s such a good feeling when you look at the finished product.

Congrats on 400 followers! That’s so exciting. 😀 And I didn’t know the background behind how Let’s Talk Bookish got started, but I loved reading its origins! So interesting. I love participating, too, so thank you so much for hosting it! And thank you for sharing my post. :3 Here’s to many more followers and many more years of LTB!

  10. I totally get the preferring to leave a meaningful comment (even if it is 3 paragraphs long), because I am the same. Although sometimes I wonder if I was better at small talk, would I get better at leaving one line comments, like “great post”, as opposed to just feeling awkward about it 😂
Rukky, as always, you are amazing. Congrats on hitting 400 followers (you truly deserve it), and I LOVE the blog makeover. You know I’m a big fan of that because I do mine all the time!! 😂💕

  11. I’m in love with your redesign, it’s so pretty! Also thank you so much for sharing my blog post 🥺 My blog has gone through so many redesigns, revamps and a name change in it’s short time of being alive xD It used to be “Book Dragons” but then I changed it to Cuppa Clo which is just…it feels more like me and the colour scheme is now a better reflection too of myself which makes me happy haha. It took me 2+ years though to get to that point though and yessss to so many of the things you mentioned! I actually have a post in the works about quality content over quantity and this post just gave me inspiration for a blog post so thank you so much ❤ Also in case I haven't said it already, CONGRATS ON 400 FOLLOWERS RUKKY! ❤ I can't wait to read the rest of your answers hehe

    1. Aww thank you!!! 💖 Haha, same I have that problem. I’m pretty sure I’ve done at least 5 major redesigns, and then several other smaller ones where I changed graphics or the backgrounds and things like that. I’m hoping that since it took me days to draw all these new ones by hand, I’ll be grateful and accept them as they are instead of changing everything within the next 6 months 😂😭 I’m glad you’ve figured your style out and hopefully both of our desgins will last much longer lol
Yayyy, I can’t wait to read both of them!! And forgive me if I finally comment on them several months later 😅
Aww thank you!! Hopefully we’ll get part 2 next week ❤

  12. Okay so this is the first time I’m visiting your blog (I’m pretty sure? If I have before and I forgot I’M SORRY MY MEMORY IS TRASH) but I absolutely love your designs! All your graphics are cohesive and your colour scheme goes along perfectly. I have to say, your book stack + mug divider is SO CUTE I’M IN LOVE. I don’t know why I’m stuck at that but I am lol.

Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS ON 400 FOLLOWERS!!! I just followed because this post was so fun to read and gave me a glimpse into you as a person and I look forward to more content.

I believe the comment about posting a lot in the beginning was mine? I said that to someone in one of my posts about blogging. A major reason why I suggested it was because it also allows us to experiment with different kinds of content in the beginning before you become very particular and become a perfectionist. Because I blogged every day for about a month or two in the beginning, where I posted ALL kinds of things, I learnt how to write different types of posts, what I liked, what people responded to, and it helped me find my voice quickly. After that, I slowed down and started making content that I liked but made each one better. I had suggested that to a new blogger in the comments because it worked for me 😅

    P. S. thanks for including my post/blog! I’m so glad you like reading my posts 💜

    1. I’m not even sure either, so it’s totally fine! Nice to meet you!! Aww, I’m so glad you do! I was kind of nervous about doing it, and I’ve been wondering if it’s maybe a little too pale rosey, pale pink whatever you want to call it, so it’s so reassuring to hear that you think it all goes well together! Especially since I love the aesthetic of your blog and your dividers so much too (the one in “if we were having tea” is so pretty!!) 💕

Aww Sumedha!! My heart, thank you 🥺❤

Yess, I finally remember!! I’ve updated the post, thank you for pointing it out!! And see, my memory is just as awful: I literally read that yesterday and I forgot everything about who and where I found it 🤦🏾‍♀️ Yeah, it’s great advice. I guess it just depends on the person. From the start, they may know what they want to do and so quality over quantity matters, but when you have no idea, doing a lot of different posts can help you get an idea. I’m glad it worked for you!! ❤

No problem!! Hopefully I’ll have a better memory next time to credit you right away lol

  13. Rukky!!! I love this redesign!!! The color scheme!!! The graphics!!! Just !!!! in general!!! ❤️❤️❤️😍

I loved reading your answers to the Q&A questions! I completely agree about not needing to participate in the “standard” weekly memes in order for your blog to gain traction. Being listed on the link-ups obviously helps with your stats, but I personally believe the policy “quality content from the start” is better in the long run.

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of your answers! Thanks for another amazing post, Rukky! 🤗

    1. I’m so glad you do Abby, thank you!! ❤
I agree, it’s definitely better in the long run. And the thing with linkups is, you get a spike in stats, but usually just on that specific day. It doesn’t always spillover to other posts that you do which is kind of disappointing.

      Thank you for reading ✨💕
