Let’s Talk Bookish – Bloghopping

Good morning!! How are you guys doing? I had a lot of plans for this week, some reviews, and another fun post, but I just…didn’t do them. But I’m still having fun with all the comments and the small amount of blog-hopping that I’m doing. But just to keep myself accountable, I’ll try and do more than two posts next week 🙂

Welcome to another Let’s Talk Bookish discussion my friends! Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, hosted by me @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

Today’s topic is: Bloghopping (suggested by Mari @ Tirilu)

Thank you so much for the topic suggestion Mari!! Let’s get started!

What’s your goal when you bloghop?

I have two main goals when I blog hop, number one of which is to see the amazing content produced by all my fellow amazing bloggers.

There’s something so fun and exciting about reading other people’s posts, and even though I am horrible at keeping up with every single blog that I’m following, I still try and take the time to read and comment on the ones that catch my attention.

And well, I’m not ashamed to say that I also blog hop with the goal of promoting myself and my tiny little blog. By doing so, I get more people to comment on my blog, and then I remember to check out their blog for new content, and I comment on theirs, and they come and check mine and it’s an endless little loop. So it’s a win-win situation.

Do you think that people can have meaningful conversations when blog-hopping?

ABSOLUTELY. Idk, I feel like I have to scream this. There is always a chance to have an amazing and meaningful conversation when bloghopping. You can even make new friends by blog hopping. There’s no downside to it (unless you count the time it takes, but the reward outweighs the trouble) and you can always have a meaningful conversation.

For example, Caitlin and I have been having this super duper long conversation in one of her posts, that she published over a month ago, that I wish will never end. Sure, it takes us a couple of days, ok, it takes me a couple of days, to respond to each other, but it’s definitely meaningful, and if I hadn’t blog hopped and commented on her post, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

So yes. Absolutely. Blog hopping gives us chances to make new friendships, discuss bookish and non-bookish things, and just relax and have fun.

Is there anything that people do when blog hopping that annoys you?

Um….no?

There really isn’t anything that blog-hoppers do that annoys me? Maybe I’m just not remembering anything right now, but I can’t think of anything…

The only downside

…is how much time and energy it takes. On an average day, it can take me about 1.5 hours to respond to all the comments on…let’s say 2 posts. And then, it’ll take me another hour or so to do some actual reading and commenting on other posts. That’s like 2.5 to 3 hours of my day gone, and idk about you, but that’s a really long time.

Usually I start to lose the zeal and energy that I had built up to tackle comments and blog hopping after the first hour, which makes me even more upset because I’ll start slacking off and just reading and liking. Or commenting, but not really saying anything substantial. It’s just a lot of energy and a lot of time, and it’s probably my fault for trying to do it all in one go instead of a few times during the week, but I’m following over 100 blogs guys, and a good number of them post everyday. So it’s a lot and very overwhelming very quickly.

But I still love it nonetheless.

  1. I definitely agree with you – blog hopping is cool because I love reading others’ content, and it’s nice that it can also help with promoting my blog, which is nothing to be ashamed of, haha. I love what you said about having a discussion, because I’m BAD at social media interactions (it’s so fast paced and makes me feel nervous to reply to tweets, even by my mutuals) but blog comments are something I love writing! And then it’s great to be able to read the blogger’s reply to my comment, and maybe even answer it if that’s necessary. 🙂 Great post!

    1. Social media honestly terrifies me, especially with cancel culture and things like that. I know it can happen with blogs too, but it’s a lot more calmer here I think (though I have absolutely no experience with social media, so I can’t really say). Blogging is just so much nicer and more about actually paying attention to what you’re saying (in a way) so I definitely love it more. Thank you 💖

  2. wait, this is really weird, but—your posts aren’t showing up in my Reader (even though I’m following you)?? the only reason i knew about this post and your who am i book tag is because you linked back to me in both 😭😭 I’m going to unfollow and then re-follow you in hopes of fixing it! just a heads up in case you find the notification that i followed you weird hehe

ahhhh, i wish our conversation would never end too 🥺🥺 and what do you mean you’re the only one who takes days to respond? i take a long time to respond too 😂 i’m just a mess in general when it comes to interacting with other bloggers, haha.

for me, blog hopping shouldn’t just be a way for you to grow your blog, but also a source of fun. it took me a while before i figured out that just following *any* blog i came across wasn’t gonna work. 1) my Reader would get so clogged everyday that i couldn’t possibly comment on all of the posts on it. 2) i didn’t even enjoy the content of most of the bloggers i was following, because i clicked the follow button without reading any of their posts 😅 so now i make sure to only follow people whose content i genuinely like, and only comment when i have something to say. sure, i blog hop because i hope people will be slightly more obligated to comment on one of my posts, but i also blog hop because i like the posts on my Reader and i want to show my support to them

i actually have a pet peeve that isn’t related to time when it comes to blog hopping—it’s when bloggers comment literally two words & then leave a link to their blog… like, could it be any more obvious that you’re commenting just so that i’ll check out your blog?? i know that to an extent, everyone blog hops in order to grow their blog, but the least you can do is show that you actually care about my content 😂😭

    1. Lol, I hope it works now!

😂 it’s ok, we’re both busy, and procrastinatiation prone, so it’s not really our fault lol

I’m still working on not following everyone too! When someone follows me, I used to follow them back automatically (if they were a book blog), but lately, I’ve been taking the extra step to check out a few of their posts before hitting follow. I defintiely need to declog my Reader and the blogs I follow. Some of them haven’t posted in months, and others are not blogs that I even interacte with, so it’s just a waste of space tbh
But anyways, yes, blog hopping isn’t just about self-promo, but also about showing support for everyone else out there!

that may be my only pet peeve too now that I think about it. Like I don’t mind necessarily, but it’s also a bit…idk what to even call it. Haha, at least it’s not entirely common, and if you think about it, us super-long-commenters kind of make up for it 😂🤦🏾‍♀️

  3. I really agree with this, Rukky! The best part of bloghopping is having fun, and having meaningful conversations with other bloggers! It can definitely take a lot of time though, but reading great posts can be so fun!

  4. I think blog hopping is wonderful to do as you can meet other bloggers, discover new books and read so much wonderful content. You are right about it being time consuming too. Especially if you’ve been away for a while. Plus I’ve noticed that on a couple of people’s pages I don’t get notifications when they reply so I worry about missing their responses.
I don’t really see why you couldn’t have meaningful conversations when blog hopping tbh. Especially on discussion type posts where other bloggers are asking for your opinions.

    1. Oh yeah, I’m very guilty of leaving my bloghopping and comments for later, and then there’s just so much and it gets overwhelming very quickly loll
Defintiely, I love discussions for that reason, because they are really the only posts that gain the most attention and result in the most interaction. It’s also a great way to positively discuss topics ❤

      1. Yeah tell me about it. I think I need to start limiting how long I spend on it in one go but do it more often so it’s slightly less daunting 😅
Yes that’s so true!! They’re wonderful to get talking to your fellow bloggers and are generally pretty passionate posts too

  5. I love blog hopping and all the amazing comments and conversations it can generate! I just wish I was less lazy lol…you’re not wrong about the time commitment. I used to blog hop way more so hopefully I can get back on that now that I have so much free time with quarantine + summer lol
