Let’s Talk Bookish – Book Fandoms

Hello, and welcome to another Let’s Talk Bookish post! Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by me, where we discuss chosen topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

Today’s topic is: Book Fandoms

Many thanks to Dani @ Literary Lion for suggesting this topic! I don’t have much to say about this because I don’t think I am part of a book fandom. But there are still some perks to being a part of one.

First of all, I haven’t read a really popular series that has such a widespread fandom.

And the few that I have, I don’t know if I would say that I’m a part of that book’s fandom. I like the book, but I don’t talk about it as much, and I’m not as invested in it as other people are.

Honestly, the question for me is this: what makes a book fandom? What makes a person part of a book fandom? Is it automatic aka if you like the book, then you’re a part of it?

Or is there more to it like, you go to all the author’s events, you scream about the book everywhere, you have clothes, mugs, book sleeves, book marks, etc. with things related to the book?

If it’s the second one, then no. I am definitely not part of any book fandom, and I think I prefer it that way.

Sure, I love books, and I love some more than others, but I feel like sometimes, people overdo and are super extra about it. Which is kind of hypocritical I guess because I like seeing other people be a part of it, and there are benefits to fandoms. You get fan art, fan fiction (though I steer clear of that), and there’s something really sweet and amazing about seeing others be super invested in a book that they love.

That’s the best part of fandoms to be honest. Seeing how much people love books.

Maybe one day I’ll be a part of one.

But for now, I’m content just watching everyone else come together to celebrate the books that they love.

  1. I agree with your second definition of a fandom! There’s a lot of books I /like/, but only a select few that I actively push on people and would consider being part of the fandom of😅—I keep up with fanart/fan theories/general memes for those books. My least part of fandoms is probably feeling like I’m not a genuine fan of something because I don’t know the book I like from front to back 😅. But, the best part is definitely the people who don’t care and just want to scream about books, and seeing how creative they get to do just that 😄!
    Nice discussion, Rukky 🙂!
