Let’s Talk Bookish – Advice You’d Give to New Bloggers

Hi guys and welcome to Let’s Talk Bookish! Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, created and hosted by me, where we discuss chosen topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

Today’s topic is: Advice You’d Give to Newbie Bloggers

I’ve only been blogging for about 8 months, so I’m by no means an expert. However, these are some things that I’d say to anyone who’s just joining the bookish blog-o-sphere based on my first few months.

#1: It’s Okay to Worry About Stats

This is probably an unpopular opinion since every blogging advice post I’ve seen has said, don’t worry about stats.

But, I say, it’s okay.

Don’t get hung up on them and be checking every few minutes (though that’s what you’ll probably be doing the first few weeks lol), but don’t feel bad if you check multiple times through-out the day. It’s been 8 months, and I still do it. It gives me a sense of security and lets me know that people are coming, people are seeing what I write and they are hopefully liking it. So don’t worry too much about doing it!

#2: It’s Okay to Ask For Help

Here’s the truth: Bloggers are the friendliest, kindest, and most amazing human beings that you’ll probably ever find on the internet. Honestly. I could scream this from the rooftops, and hang up signs everywhere, and it still wouldn’t be enough to get my point across.

Ok, sure, there may be one or two bloggers who aren’t very nice, but don’t let that discourage you because the rest of us are super kind and patient and willing to help!! And you never know, they might just be having a bad day and may be really nice most of the time!!

You shouldn’t feel scared, or nervous about asking about how things work, or about how to do this or that in WP, or even if another blogger wants to work with you for whatever you want to do! Just go for it, and it’s pretty much guaranteed that you will find new friends out of whomever you ask.

#3: Hiatuses? Late Replies? Late Blog Posts? It’s Absolutely 100% A-Okay

I think I should rename this to “It’s Okay | things that seem taboo about blogging but aren’t”. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!!

Hiatuses are perfectly fine. As a matter of fact, I am on hiatus too! And don’t worry about losing followers, or having a dip in your stats, because when you’re back, the community is going to be right here waiting for you. Even unannounced hiatuses are 100% understandable. Remember, we are all bloggers – we do understand how hard it can be to balance blogging with life, so we definitely won’t judge.

Edit: Ok, so it looks like my words are not super clear, so let me elaborate. DO try and announce a hiatus beforehand so that your readers don’t get alarmed by your disappearance, but if you can’t, or it slips your mind, don’t be too hard on yourself about it, and try to let them know as soon as you can. Your readers will appreciate it, and they will more than likely understand.

Same goes for late replies to comments. Life happens, and you might forget to respond to a comment, or you don’t have the time, or you might even completely miss one! And that’s okay because as I said above, we all know how hard it is, and we completely understand.

As you can probably guess, it’s 100% okay to write blog posts late (this includes tags, missing a post, or anything!). There’s no need for me to repeat myself as I’m sure you get the point.

  1. Hello I know I’m late to the discussion but I want to say thank you for this post! I’m a new blogger (been here for a few weeks already) and I definitely like to look at the stats 😅 but I’m trying not to worry about what the stats show me too much and just enjoy the blogging act itself.

  2. This post is really helpful, because I started a week ago and am checking stats so much. Each site has so many posts that it’s overwhelming, but your points are so clear and very reassuring!

  3. This is such a lovely post! ❤ I absolutely agree that it's okay to ask for help, worry a little about stats, and take hiatuses! I constantly reprimanded myself for being late to writing posts and replying to comments earlier this year, but I've learned to accept that it's alright. We're all human, and we need some time to focus on ourselves sometimes! Blogging is a hobby, and it would be difficult for us to be passionate about our posts if we're too stressed or busy to fully enjoy it!

    Happy reading, love! ❤

    1. Aww thank you so much Kelly!! Exactly my point!! Blogging is fun, but it can be stressful, and we’ve gotta remember always why we’re doing it so that we can enjoy it as much as possible.

Happy reading to you too 💚

  4. omg I agree with everything here! Worrying about stats is totally okay and can definitely be helpful in growing your blog. It’s important to understand how much has changed!

ALSO totally agree with your last point. I think hiatuses can be super important. And blogging is supposed to be fun, not stressful! So it’s okay to be a bit late with comments and things, IMO

    1. I’m so glad you do!! Exactly why I think it’s perfectly okay!! I check my stats A LOT through-out the day, and it helps me be a better blogger.

Yes, you shouldn’t beat yourself up too much about it, but don’t neglect it either. It shouldn’t feel like a chore, but more like something great that you love doing! I’m so glad you agree with me Ally 💚

  5. I check my stats daily 😂. I’ve enjoyed watching them grow as I become more interactive and immersed in the blogging world. I always get a little bummed when a blog I enjoy takes a hiatus, but I appreciate that they let the readers know and I stay right there waiting for them to come back!

    1. Haha, I do too, and multiple times through-out the day as well! It makes me proud to see how well I’m doing lol. Yeah, it’s disappointing when some bloggers aren’t around, but it’s understandable, and we are all definitely eager to welcome them right back 😉

  6. This is some excellent advice, although I do prefer it when bloggers let everyone know about hiatuses they’re going on (or will go on soon) if at all possible. I worry a little bit about blogging buddies who suddenly disappear.

They definitely don’t have to share the reason for their hiatus or how long they’ll be gone if that information is private/ still in development/ not something they’ve figured out yet.

I just like to know that they’re okay and, like Renard said, haven’t abandoned their blog permanently. 🙂

    1. Thank you Lydia! Yeah, I’ve worried about some bloggers as well who have disappeared, so I understand what you mean.

Like I said to Renard, what I meant was, it’s okay if you forget, or if life gets in the way and you can’t announce, but do try to announce when it’s possible. I’m going to fix that to make it more clear.

Thank you so so much for stopping by and for joining the discussion 💚

  7. 🙂 When it comes to blogging, I can be somewhat of a Drill Sargeant (I approach blogging in a strict manner).

Now, although I believe that it is okay for a blogger to take a hiatus, I believe that the blogger should inform their viewing audience (via a post of theirs) that they will be going on a hiatus for a particular time period.

    Why?

Because it lets your viewing audience know that you are taking time off from blogging (The last thing that the blogger wants is for people to wrongly think that they abandoned their blog).

For the record, we all have our unique way of doing things; therefore, the advice given on your blog post is in no way wrong.

Do enjoy the rest of your day!

    1. Yeah, I understand! I try to post about taking a hiatus in advance, but I’ve had it happen once before where I didn’t have the time, and then I forgot to announce the fact that I’m taking time off. I was just trying to say that you shouldn’t feel too bad if that happened to you too.

But I get your point, and I will amend my post, to make it more clear.

Thank you so much for sharing your opinion 🙂 I hope you enjoy the rest of your day as well!!!
